On 18 November, 2025, San Sebastián welcomed over 130 participants to the “Better Understanding AI” event at the Kursaal. The session, moderated by Jaime García Cantero, independent analyst and director of “Retina” content at “El País”, aimed to bring artificial intelligence (AI) closer to citizens by demystifying the technology, showcasing its real-world applications, and highlighting how it can benefit everyday life and professional contexts. The strong turnout reflected the public’s keen interest in AI and underscored the city’s commitment to digital literacy, innovation, and responsible adoption of technology.
The event is a prime example of collaboration within the local science and innovation ecosystem. Held in partnership with BAIC (Basque Artificial Intelligence Centre), it featured the participation of key local stakeholders working in the field of AI, including Audens, Tecnun University, Multiverse Computing, Naru Intelligence, and Nuuk. By sharing real-life examples, these stakeholders helped attendees better understand AI while learning about ethical considerations, data protection, and its potential applications.
“Better Understanding AI” was part of the 12th Innovation Week (Donostia WeekINN), organized by the Department of Economy and Local Employment through Fomento de San Sebastián. Since its first edition, collaboration with national and international organizations has been essential to hosting over 400 activities across multiple venues in the city, and attracting broad public citizen participation.
Aligned with the work of Fomento de San Sebastián in the European Interreg Europe ENAIBLER project, which focuses on implementing AI-driven policies to support the digital transformation of local territories, this event represents a local contribution to raising public awareness, fostering trust in AI technologies, and promoting citizen engagement in AI adoption.
