San Sebastián Study Visit Explores the Importance of Building a Robust AI Ecosystem

On 13 and 14 November 2024, Fomento San Sebastian hosted a 2-day interregional event and follow-up meeting of the ENAIBLER project, cofunded within the framework of the EU Interreg Europe programme.

interreg_diciembre_logo.jpgThe main goal of ENAIBLER, in which 9 partners from 6 EU regions including regional and local authorities, development agencies and a university, is to assist public sector organisations to unlock the benefits of AI and the implementation of more open, transparent and ethical policies and services.

During these two days, the project partners took stock of the implementation of the activities carried out so far and worked on the planning of the actions to be implemented over the coming months.

The first working day focused on gaining a deeper understanding of the local AI ecosystem. Participants had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the global framework of San Sebastian's ecosystem, find out about the strategic axes underpinning the city's economic development, and receive an overview of the local AI ecosystem and key stakeholders.

This exploration of the city’s AI landscape was enriched by firsthand insights from various local AI organizations. On one hand, the Basque Artificial Intelligence Center (BAIC) introduced itself and explained its mission to promote the widespread use of AI throughout the region. On the other hand, two innovative AI start-ups based in the city, Naru and Nuavis, shared their experiences, offering participants a detailed look into the potential of Artificial Intelligence, local entrepreneurship in AI and the competitiveness of San Sebastian's business ecosystem.

During the morning participants also engaged in a workshop on how to define AI-driven initiatives and identify the key elements of an effective AI policy.

The first day concluded with a study visit to Vicomtech, an applied research center specializing in digital technologies. This visit offered project partners a broader perspective on the current state of AI research in this center and the potential applications of this technology in the public sector.

This interregional event concluded on November 14 th with a second working day that focused on monitoring the technical aspects related to project management, the work carried out during last months and the next activities to be developed.
