To address the rapidly growing demand for high-performance, rechargeable batteries it is critical to develop safe and sustainable materials that can operate at high voltage. Solid polymer electrolytes are a promising choice for lithium metal batteries but their application with high-voltage cathodes, to achieve high energy density batteries, has so far been limited by electrochemical instability at the cathode-electrolyte interface.
The aim of this project is to investigate electrolyte additives in solid polymer electrolytes to enhance their electrochemical stability for high-voltage batteries. To date, a range of additives have been shown to improve charge transport and the formation of protective interphases in conventional liquid electrolytes, but their functionality in non-flammable solid-state electrolytes is not yet well understood. Therefore, this project will study the electrochemical performance and materials properties of several solid polymer electrolytes with lithium salt and lithium-free additives in lithium metal batteries with cobalt-free cathodes.
The project’s activities include electrolyte and electrode fabrication and characterisation, battery coin cell and pouch cell assembly, electrochemical battery testing, and post mortem electrode - electrolyte interface characterisation using spectroscopy, microscopy, and diffraction techniques. The results of the research project will be presented in a seminar to the group and written for a possible publication.
