As the space domain becomes increasingly congested, safe and assured autonomy is proposed as one approach to enable small numbers of human ground operators to manage large constellations of satellites and tackle more complex missions such as in-Space or On-orbit Servicing. Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM/OSAM). While past missions have relied heavily on human assistance, future ISAM and OSAM missions will likely rely more on unmanned, fully robotic missions. Currently, unmanned spacecrafts are composed of machinery that operate solely on human issued commands, however future missions will require the ability to operate without human interventions in times of need. Autonomous and automatic control systems can maintain vehicle safety and mission assurance in these instances. At the Advanced Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Control Laboratory we are working on a novel data-informed framework for the simultaneous and coordinated design of a learning based primary controller and data-enabled safety-filters for rendezvous and proximity operations in collaboration with NASA.
In our lab, we emulate satellite dynamics on small aerial platforms, both in simulation and experimentally with actual vehicles, to verify and test the developed close proximity satellite autonomy control algorithms.
Candidates will be responsible for conducting research and writing scientific papers for dissemination of results. Candidates will work under the direct supervision and will be affiliated with the Advanced Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Control Lab.
