    Battery electric vehicles (BEVs), especially those powered by lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), hold a paramount role in addressing pressing global challenges on decarbonization. BEVs significantly curb greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in urban areas by emitting zero tailpipe pollutants, benefiting public health. Governments worldwide are incentivizing their adoption, signaling a collective commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
    The LIBs have become a standard for use in electric vehicles. However, alongside the expansion of BEVs, battery-related accidents have raised concerns over the safety of lithium-ion batteries. BEVs are expected to perform in a broad range of operating conditions and must be subjected to safety testing. One of the most servere hazards is thermal runaway (TR), where the cell undergoes uncontrolled self-heating. TR and other hazards are triggered when the battery short circuits internally. LIB safety testing and thermal management, therefore, is important.
    In this project, the trainee will investigate the LIB safety testing and thermal management experimentally or numerically. This will be determined by mutual interests. In experiment, the enhanced phase change materials will be developed and tested to maintain battery temperatures under simulated thermal runaway conditions. In numerical studies, the trainee will use simulation software, such as COMSOL, to model the battery thermal runaway to study the mechanisms and design new strategies for battery thermal management.
