While being robust, sustainable and safe. The best way to achieve these requirements is with a proper control of the battery chemistry at the cell level and mitigating the degradation reactions that degrade the battery over time.
The aim of this project is to design and investigate fluorine-free polymeric materials to be used in batteries (such as polyurethanes, polycarbonates and self-healing polymers). Highly fluorinated components categorized as PFAS are being phased out of many applications, not least batteries. Finding suitable alternatives is key to increase battery sustainability, decrease toxicity and comply with the upcoming regulations.
Two types of materials will be targeted. First, polymer binders for high voltage cathode materials. The main target is to find electrochemically stable and flexible polymers processable in water.
Second, solid polymer electrolytes with fluorine-free salts will be investigated to replace flammable organic solvents currently used in lithium-ion batteries.
The activities to be carried out in this project are synthesis and characterization of fluorine-free salts and polymers, cell assembly (including electrode fabrication), cell characterization using electrochemical methods and post mortem interface characterization. The results of the research project will be presented in a seminar to the group and written for a possible publication.
