The SmartKalea project of the City Council of Donostia-San Sebastián receives the Smart Cities 2015 award, from the SOCINFO Foundation (Foundation for Information Society)

SMARTKALEA, a project led by Fomento de San Sebastián, was created with the aim of promoting environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, citizenship participation and transparency using cutting edge technology and it is materialised in Mayor Street, one of the main streets of the Old Town in San Sebastián. Specifically, it seeks to achieve a greater saving in energy and water consumption of stores and housing in San Sebastián, besides of a saving regarding some infrastructures of the street.

The basis of the project is measuring and optimization. A comprehensive monitoring of energy and water consumption of the street is performed and actions are taken according to this knowledge, achieving significant energy and economic savings.

The project will serve as pilot test to further this strategy of Smart City.

Several Departments of the City Council of San Sebastian (Department of Environment, Department of Infrastructures and Urban Services) coordinated by Fomento San Sebastián, besides of several technology providers collaborate in this project, involving trade/catering, companies and residents of the city.
