Implementation Of Icts

Another of the spheres of activity of the SmartKalea Project is the testing of various technology tools so that businesses and shops in the street, depending on the results and benefits that are observed, can include them in their everyday activity. This is a new initiative that encourages innovation in shops through the smart use of ICTs.

INFRASTRUCTURES

Fomento de San Sebastián, in collaboration with the Department of Infrastructures and Urban Services, replaced the street lighting on the Calle Mayor with a smart lighting system with motion detectors. The initiative was replicated in the district of Altza, where a total of 37 smart street lights were installed. Replacing the street lamps that are now in operation aims to save energy and reduce the maintenance costs of street lighting, by providing a new light source for the current street lighting, using remotely controlled dimmable LED lights and a pedestrian motion detection and analysis system in the area. In addition, the system involves a smart lighting model that saves energy, and therefore reduces costs, and enables monitoring of the system, remote programming and improvements in maintenance tasks.

Another of the initiatives carried out on the infrastructure in the Street has been the installation of a smart solar charger near the Calle Mayor, in collaboration with a local company, that enables citizens and visitors to charge different devices (mobiles, tablets, etc.).

Furthermore, environmental sensors have been installed that focus on monitoring the air quality in the city by measuring parameters such as CO2, NOx, SO2, etc.

In the district of Altza an initiative has been launched to make the streets cleaner by using ICTs, with the aim of improving the environmental quality of the district by reducing the amount of litter detected on public streets. To do this measures have been implemented to raise public awareness about the harm caused by this kind of litter, and to monitor waste in order to check the effectiveness of the measures adopted.

COUNTING AND TRACKING PEOPLE

The streets that have joined the project have a system to count people that is especially interesting for shops in the area as it enables them to obtain data to analyse, plan and manage resources so that they can optimise business performance. The most interesting data include the number of people that enter each street, periods when pedestrian traffic is heaviest, tracking and routes followed in the street, etc. In addition the shops in the street have been provided with a (rotating) interior counting sensor so that they can measure the number of people coming into the establishment, which allows shops to know the ratio between this number and the total number of people going up and down the street so that they can obtain valuable information to help them assess business activities. These tools have been deployed in the Old Part and in certain places in the district of Altza.

ICT TRAINING AND IMPLEMENTATIONS FOR SHOPS

The aim of this innovative initiative is to provide shopkeepers with training in ICTs and to support the implementation of pilot projects in their establishments that allows them to test technology solutions to improve their business competitiveness. The goal is to place shops in San Sebastián at the forefront of ICT use and to join efforts to operate on the market, all this within the framework of a smart city.

CCALL FOR IDEAS FOR PRODUCTS OR SERVICES FOR COMPANIES

Within the framework of the SmartKalea Project Fomento de San Sebastián launches a call each year for ideas for products or services so that businesses can test them in real conditions in the city. The ideas that are selected are implemented, turning the city into a smart laboratory. This initiative also enables the companies taking part to use the city as a showcase for their smart products or services.
