The department of economic development and sign an agreement to support the creation and growth of new technology businesses

The agreement reached by the two institutions encompasses the promotion of activities and programmes to support the creation of new technology businesses related with the activity of Ikor, a company that specialises in the design, development and manufacture of electronic circuits. Furthermore, the Department of Economic Development, through Fomento de San Sebastián, pledges to work with Ikor to develop pathways for the retention and development of qualified young people, generating professional development opportunities within this sphere of activity.

The Department of Economic Promotion, through Fomento de San Sebastián, is seeking to consolidate San Sebastian as a major point of reference in research and innovation, and it is doing this particularly by supporting people, committing to local and international talent as the foundation of this strategy. Along these lines, within the framework of the Connecting Talent initiative, it has rolled out a series of services, programmes and funding opportunities focusing especially on connecting highly qualified young people with businesses linked with innovation and R&D. The aim, in this case, is to support the development of entrepreneurial talent, facilitating access to the resources of both entities in order to develop high value-added technological projects principally.

The First Deputy Mayor, Ernesto Gasco, highlighted that "this agreement reinforces the commitment we are making through our "Connecting Talent" strategy to attract, develop and retain talent, and in this case, we are doing this once again through a public-private partnership, with a leading international company, a major player based here in San Sebastian, identifying an opportunity to support young companies and entrepreneurs with innovation projects, through a specific model of support".

Ikor, founded in San Sebastián in 1981, is a global company with premises in Spain, Mexico and China, which operates around the world, and employs close to 800 people. The company is committed to innovation and offers comprehensive electronic circuit design and manufacture services with complete supply chain solutions delivered to the world's leading industrial and technology companies. As part of its philosophy and strategic vocation, it has been committed for many years to supporting local talent and start-ups, a commitment reflected in the collaboration agreements it has reached with universities and its programme to promote entrepreneurial initiatives.

The agreement entails the development of a complete support pathway delivered jointly by the two entities, in which the projects selected will receive the following services:

  • Initial financial-technical evaluation.
  • Technical mentoring.
  • Development of minimum viable product.
  • Market development mentoring.
  • Access to funding and subsidies

In accordance with the agreement established, a maximum of four projects will be chosen to receive mentoring every year. Each of the entities will make their knowledge and resources available, aimed at the development of businesses that could be set up or implemented in San Sebastian.

Regarding the support given by Fomento to Ikor in the development of pathways to retain and promote the local talent of qualified young individuals, the following actions will be developed:

  • International placements for under 30s to conduct strategic research.
  • Support the recruitment of young people whose first work experience is linked to a research project.
  • Incorporate young talent onto innovation projects developed by the company.
  • Bring back qualified individuals who are currently working abroad and wish to return to
  • San Sebastian, in order to work in the organisation.

50% of this programme could be financed by the European Social Fund as part of the ESF Operational Programme for the Basque Country 2014-2020, within the “Donostia GazteEkin Programme: integration adapted to the employment market of young qualified job-seekers in the city's emerging and strategic sectors".
