Surfing and Innovation Workshop organised by Fomento de San Sebastián, within the framework of the Surfing Europe project (COSME-EU)

The workshop, organised by the Donostia City Surf Cluster (an agency of the Department for Economic Development) through Fomento de San Sebastián, will take place at the Miramar Palace in Donostia-San Sebastián on 18 November. It will gather trade members from all over Europe and keynote speakers like Vicent Dutot (Paris School of Business), Eduardo Cenzano (Trinity Technologies) or Kevin Cook (Museum of British Surfing). Admission is free, but registration is required.

As the agency behind the Donostia Surf City Cluster, Fomento de San Sebastián is organising this Surfing and Innovation Workshop along with professionals in the surfing industry. The workshop is intended to be a meeting point where trade members can share ideas, projects and working areas, exploring innovation as applied to surfing and board sports at large.

The workshop is in fact the closing event of the Surfing Europe project, co- funded by the EU’s programme for SMEs, COSME, and led by Fomento de San Sebastián with such partners as Itxaslehor S.L., Nere Ariztoy, the Town of Viana do Castelo (Portugal), Nautisme en Bretagne (France), the Town of Ribamontán al Mar, Surfing GB (UK) and Discover Bundoran (Ireland). Partner representatives will come to San Sebastián to attend the workshop and a series of business meetings, as they gain first-hand knowledge of the local surf industry and its support in the public sector. Since the partners are carrying out surf development projects in their cities of origin, contact with them will continue in the future.

Specifically, the workshop will address a contemporary business challenge: e-commerce and online presence. Although the sector’s target is sales, going digital means relying on images, messages and sentiments adapted to the World Wide Web.

Furthermore, once you reach your target audience, you must be able to offer interesting content to ensure loyalty. If you can produce stories your audience can relate to, you will increase audience empathy, which may translate into growing sales and word-of- mouth advertising.

The speakers at the workshop represent companies and organisations that are doing well and thus have a lot to teach:

Vincent Dutot. Paris School of Business. Chaire D3 (Digital, Data, Design). Social Media Awards Organising Committee. A connoisseur of the surf industry, Mr Dutot will talk about digitisation and social media, his starting point being the question, ‘Can we still control our actions?’.

Eduardo Cenzano.Trinity Technolgies. Based on his 15 years’ experience in the management of e-innovation projects, Mr Cenzano will discuss crowdfunding as online marketing innovation.

Kevin Cook. Museum of British Surfing. Mr Cook will be talking about the origins of surfing in Europe and how it grew into a sport, a way of life, a culture. His presentation will be titled, ‘Preserving and Promoting Our European Surfing Heritage’.

Márcio Borgonovo dos Santos. All in Surf (start-up to develop a unique tool gathering multiple water navigation sensors). Mr Borgonovo will share the results of a PhD project in which surfing is being studied in a controlled environment in his talk titled, ‘From Research to Market: A Long Voyage’.

Iker Aguirre. NSI Agency. French national research group on new management methods and business management. An expert in international surfing markets, Mr Aguirre will focus on the trend back to humanising relationships in the aftermath of the digital transformation.

This workshop is targeted at professionals in the manufacturing industry (boards, clothes, accessories and others), distributors, specialist retailers, professionals in the sports industry (event planning, specialist media, audio visual and production companies) and members of the tourism industry (surf camps, clubs and schools, surf guides, accommodations, bars and restaurants, active travel companies and surf enterprises).
